Domain names are just what they are. Names. If you purchase just a domain name, then that gives you ownership of that particular web address. For example, I own the domain name “WildAbe.com” – you can check who owns a domain name by visiting website listed in sources.
Many Domain names in ebay come with web hosting packages, meaning that they provide you online storage to place your web files so that you will have a real website. Go to wildabe.com – you will see nothing. Now, I could pay for a web hosting package and then create a website that anyone in the world could go see – but I haven’t yet.
Domain name selling is big business now. Lets say I was surfing the net, created the name “Google” and wanted to buy a name for emy personal website. I bought Google.com. Well, lets say the guys in California come along and want to name their serach engine Google. Well, they really want the domain name, Google.com so they will offer to buy if from me for xxx millions of dollars. Thats what is all about. People buy and hold onto names, hoping that a company or individual will wnat that name bad enough to pay a good price for it.
(PS – I am not advertising my website, just using it as an example)

here is what I got from the yahoo website itself. it says after the term expires its 34.95/year, which is bit worrying. may be you can transfer your domain to another register after the term but its a hassel.
“1-year term: $ 1.99 (special discount for new customers only)
2-year term: $ 11.94 ($ 1.99 for your first year, $ 9.95 for your second year)
3-year term: $ 21.89 ($ 1.99 for your first year, $ 9.95 for your next two years)
5-year term: $ 41.79 ($ 1.99 for your first year, $ 9.95 for your next four years)
After term expires: $ 34.95/year (only annual terms available after initial term expires)”
would recommend goDaddy which is just $ 10 per year
you can find goDaddy coupons in the below web page which allows you to register domain at only $ 7 per year
